Old World monkeys are primates and are more closely related to humans and apes than any other living nonhuman primate group. The Smithsonian Institution’s Division of Mammals ( houses many Old World monkeys in its scientific collections. 

This specimen, USNM 481795 (, is a male Western red colobus monkey (Piliocolobus badius badius) from Liberia. This individual was collected by D. A. Schlitter in 1971 near Zwedru in Grand Gedeh Province. This individual weighed 19.4 lbs, had a total length of 1200 mm, a tail length of 628 mm, a hind tarsus length of 175 mm, and an ear notch length of 32 mm.

This is a CT scan of the mandible of USNM 481795. These three-dimensional scans are made publicly available through the generous support of the Smithsonian 2.0 Fund, provided from the annual gifts of the Smithsonian National Board to the Secretary to use at his discretion (, and the Smithsonian Collections Care and Preservation Fund.
