Orangutan, Sumatra (USNM 143595)
This specimen, USNM 143595 (http://collections.mnh.si.edu/search/mammals/?irn=7251580), is an orangutan from the island of Sumatra, Indonesia (Pongo abelii) that was collected by W.L. Abbott at Aru Bay on January 28th, 1906. This juvenile male weighed 30 lbs with a head to body length of 565 mm. While standing, the male measured 840 mm tall. The flash model of this orangutan tibia is scaled to 50% in order to fit inside the viewer.
This is a CT scan of the left tibia of USNM 143595. These three-dimensional scans are made publicly available through the generous support of the Smithsonian 2.0 Fund, provided from the annual gifts of the Smithsonian National Board to the Secretary to use at his discretion (http://smithsonian20.si.edu/fund.html), and the Smithsonian Collections Care and Preservation Fund.
