Library patrons were invited to answer to the question "What does it mean to be human?" while visiting the Exploring Human Origins traveling exhibit at the Cottage Grove Public Library in Cottage Grove, OR.

They wrote their answers on sticky notes which are represented here exactly as they were written, without editing of text; any drawings are described in parentheses.

LOVE! (underlined)
To be human is to have empathy and compassion deeply engrained in the same part of us that also houses aggression and fear. To be human is to understand our impact, and how it affects others.
We massacre other tribes
It means - we get to rule the planet - For betteror for worse! Cottage Grove, Oregon
We tell stories.
To learn and grow, besting our predecessers. Love, laugh, cry, develope and educate younger generations.
To love, laugh live & share (drawing of smiley face)
We make art
As far as I know humans are the only animals that kiss.
To understand that it is we humans who are responsible for the longevity of this planet. Surely it, as we, will ultimately pass on. But, we do have some say in the length & quality of that existance.
Explore levels of higher conseiousness
We wear clothing.
We don't know yet. We are fallen and thus subhuman.
An interesting book that also this question is the Third Chimpanzee by Jared Diamond.
To be human is to question our importance in relation to other poeple, other species and the depth of time.
- Humans need/want to question their origin or history. - Humans seem to be the only animal that wants to create a supreme being.
