Library patrons were invited to answer to the question "What does it mean to be human?" while visiting the Exploring Human Origins traveling exhibit at the Cottage Grove Public Library in Cottage Grove, OR.
They wrote their answers on sticky notes which are represented here exactly as they were written, without editing of text; any drawings are described in parentheses.

To be human is to have empathy and compassion deeply engrained in the same part of us that also houses aggression and fear. To be human is to understand our impact, and how it affects others.

To understand that it is we humans who are responsible for the longevity of this planet. Surely it, as we, will ultimately pass on. But, we do have some say in the length & quality of that existance.
