INSTRUCTIONS: DOWNLOADING AND USING THE DIGITAL ARCHIVE
1. Download the file “Carnivore.zip” or “Ungulate.zip” to your local hard drive (right click on the link and select “save as”).
2. Unzip the downloaded file and extract the files to a folder of your choice.
3. Locate the “vcview” application file from the list of unzipped files. Double-click on this file to install and open the viewer on your computer for navigating the archive.
TO BROWSE IMAGES
To select groups of images for browsing, use the dropdown menus. To begin, look for a blank dropdown menu in the upper left portion of the screen. Select “lower” or “upper” jaw. Next a second dropdown menu will open below and select family or tribe taxon of interest (for bovids). A third dropdown menu will open for genus selection, a fourth for species, a fifth for age, a sixth menu for sex (if available), and a final menu for dental view.
If you are interested viewing all images available for the selections in the dropdown menus, click on the “view all" button located below. If are interested in viewing images of a particular selection from the dropdown menu, leave all selection boxes blank below your selection blank and click "veiw all." Thumbnail images of all dentitions for selected categories in the dropdown menus will be displayed. Up to 16 thumbnail images are displayed in the viewer window at a time. Use the vertical scroll bar on the right to browse all the images for the categories selected.
To view a larger image of one of the thumbnail images, select the thumbnail and click on the "Large Image" or “XL Image” button. When viewing a larger image, you will find displayed at the top of the screen basic descriptions such as age, common name, upper or lower jaw, dental view and sex, followed by the Smithsonian (USNM) catalogue number of the displayed specimen. The “XL image” view has the following features: scrolling, + / - zoom, and selection of images for grouping and copying to other applications.To return to the screen with your original selection of images, press the “Return to Selection” button at the top right of the screen.
TO SEARCH IMAGES
The search feature uses keywords such as taxonomic category and some common names.
First, select the "search" button. Next, in the window above, enter a keyword (search expression) that corresponds to a standard taxonomic category (for example: the tribe Antilopini, the family Giraffidae, the genus Panthera, etc.), then click the "search" button below. New dropdown menus will open so that you can refine your selection. Double-click on a listed keyword to add it to your search. Continue clicking and adding new keywords from the list to further refine your search, and thumbnail images will appear based on your selections.
